The best portable SSDs for creators drowning in footage
Speed you actually need, the 3-2-1 rule that saves your work, and why the cheapest drive on the marketplace is the most expensive thing you'll ever buy
I lost about three weeks of footage in 2022. Not to a dramatic failure, just a portable drive that stopped being recognised one Tuesday morning and never came back. I had one copy. That was the entire lesson, delivered in a single sentence by a recovery service quoting more than the footage was worth.
Everything below is what I do now, and most of it isn’t about which drive to buy.
Speed: what actually matters
Portable SSDs come in two broad tiers and the marketing does its best to blur them.
SATA-based portable SSDs. Around 550 MB/s. Cheaper, still much faster than a spinning disk, entirely fine for archive, transfer and backup. Editing a 4K multicam timeline off one is an exercise in patience.
NVMe portable SSDs. 1,000 MB/s and up over USB 3.2 Gen 2, considerably more over USB4 or Thunderbolt. This is what you want if you edit directly from the drive.
The connection matters as much as the drive. An NVMe drive on an old USB 3.0 port runs at the port’s speed, not the drive’s, and plenty of people buy fast storage and then bottleneck it with the cable that came in the box. Check what your machine actually has before you spend.
For most solo creators, one NVMe working drive plus cheaper archive storage is the right shape. Buying the fastest available for footage you’ll touch once is money spent on nothing.
The rule that actually saves your work
Speed is a preference. This is not.
Three copies, on two different types of media, one of them off-site. It’s an old rule from the IT world and it survives because everything else fails.
In practice, for a solo creator:
- Copy one: the working drive, the fast NVMe you edit from.
- Copy two: a local backup on different hardware. A larger spinning disk is fine and cheap. Different type matters, because identical drives bought together fail in correlated ways.
- Copy three: off-site. Cloud storage, or a drive at a family member’s house that you swap monthly. This is the copy that survives theft, fire and flood, and it’s the one everyone skips.
The critical word is automatic. A backup that depends on you remembering is a backup that stops happening in week three. Set it to run on a schedule and check occasionally that it actually ran.
Test your restores
Nobody does this and it’s the difference between having backups and believing you have backups.
Once a quarter, pick a random old project and actually restore it. Open the files. Confirm they’re there and they work.
I’ve found two silently broken backups this way. One had been failing for four months because a folder got renamed, and the software had been cheerfully reporting success while copying nothing.
What to avoid
Unbranded drives from marketplaces. Fake capacity is genuinely common. A “4TB” drive with a controller that reports 4TB and holds 128GB, overwriting the earliest data as you fill it. You find out when you try to restore, which is the worst possible moment. Buy known brands from sellers you’d trust with a warranty claim.
Bus-powered drives on a hub. Underpowered hubs cause disconnects mid-write, which is one of the better ways to corrupt a project file.
Leaving one drive as your only copy of anything, even briefly. The gap between shooting and backing up is where losses happen. Card to drive, drive to backup, before you sleep.
The cable that came in the box, if it doesn’t match your port’s speed. Cheap upgrade, immediate difference.
Field workflow
The habit that has saved me repeatedly, applied every shoot day:
Shoot, then offload cards to the working drive at the first opportunity. Verify the copy visually, open a couple of files. Then copy to a second drive before formatting a single card. Cards stay full until there are two copies elsewhere, which means the card is effectively a third copy for free while travelling.
If you shoot on the move, this matters more, because hotels, airports and rental cars are where equipment disappears. Archive, and when to stop keeping things
Storage is cheap but not free, and infinite hoarding has a cost in both money and findability.
What I keep permanently: final exports, project files, and selects. What I delete after a year: raw footage from projects that are done and unlikely to be revisited.
That last one takes discipline and it’s the right call. The odds of needing raw B-roll from a video published fourteen months ago are low, and the cost of keeping every frame forever is a storage bill that grows without limit.
Name folders by date and project, consistently, from day one. Future you searching for something from two years ago will be extremely grateful, and no amount of clever software substitutes for a naming convention you actually follow.
My take
Buy one good NVMe drive from a brand with a warranty, sized at roughly double what you think you need, and connect it with a cable that matches your port’s speed. That’s the purchase decision and it takes about ten minutes of research.
Then spend the rest of your attention on the part that actually matters, which is having more than one copy. Three copies, two media types, one off-site, automated, and tested quarterly. It’s tedious and it isn’t a gadget recommendation, but it’s the only thing standing between you and the Tuesday morning I had.

Are portable SSDs reliable enough for backup? +
As one copy of several, yes. As your only copy, absolutely not, and this applies to every storage medium. SSDs fail differently from hard drives, often suddenly and without the warning noises a dying spinning disk gives you. Treat any single drive as something that could be gone tomorrow and structure your backups accordingly.
